The one who came home from somewhere far away with pictures of tile and floors and almost nothing else.
Porcelain. A mandala worked into the upper half of the disc, then antique aqua laid over it in gloss, with brown underglaze pressed down into every carved line and wiped back... which is what makes the pattern look older than it is. Below the mandala, nothing at all. Raw clay, matte and bare, left exactly the way it came out of the fire. Gloss against matte. Aqua against white. Every mark against none. Reddish brown Italian leather. Brass accents. From a studio in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.
It reads like a fragment of tile off a courtyard wall... the piece of the pattern that survived. Long over white linen in August. Over a denim jacket in October. With the silver and turquoise you have been collecting for years. For the woman whose shelves are full of things she carried home in her hand luggage because she was not willing to check them.
