Ferns pressed into clay and gone grey as stone... which is more or less how the real ones ended up in museums.
Porcelain, with fern fronds pressed into the surface one at a time, radiating out around the open center. Smoke grey glaze pulled across the whole face, running thin and pale over the raised fronds and pooling darker down inside every impression... which is what lifts each leaf away from the ground behind it. Reddish brown Italian leather. Oxidized brass accents. Made slow in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.
Grey goes everywhere. Charcoal, cream, navy, black, denim, the whole closet. At 2.25 inches across it holds real presence without using a single color to do it. For the woman with a shelf of things she picked up outside. The pressed flowers still flattened in the book. The one who always liked the geology floor best.
