This one looks unearthed... and it was made this spring.
Terracotta under clear gloss, which turns raw red clay a deep chocolate brown, rich and warm and lit from somewhere inside it. A bloom pressed into the center by hand, petal by petal, dot by dot... every mark made one at a time with a tool. Mountain peaks worked along the entire border, running the edge of the oval like a range on a horizon you have actually driven through. Patina brass at the throat, turquoise green against all that brown. Brass beads at the ends of the cord. From a studio in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.
Long and narrow... nearly three inches of it, hanging with light weight and reading like an amulet, because that is essentially what it is. Over a cream sweater in October. With denim, boots, and the turquoise rings you already own. For the woman whose shelves are full of pottery picked up in small towns... the one who can tell you where every piece came from and who she was with when she found it.
